Shooting an underwater scene: Low-budget location

9 years, 10 months ago - Jason Chua

Hi all,

For my upcoming short film, I am looking to shoot a particular scene underwater ideally in a pool (as I require the slight vastness, clarity of the water, and ability to shine a powerful HMI on my talent). Looking around, the cost of hiring a professional water tank or studio is astronomically high and so, I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how I could possibly obtain this shot on the cheap? This would have to be somewhere in London.

As well, I would really appreciate any advice from anyone with experience shooting underwater about potential problems and things to consider!

Best,
Jason

You need special underwater cameras. If you can get the insurance you can use my pool in Kent, it's quite big, and we are zone 6 of london. To heat it for 1 day to bath water temp costs about £150 and takes 3 days and I will charge £250 for the day/£150 for half day while you are filming.. It has some underwater lighting but I expect you need special lights too.

How deep do you need? Swimming pools with high boards normally run 4m or so. If you can afford to at least pay an overtime rate to the caretaker you might be able to book one after hours. Or maybe a private boarding school one at holidays.

However I suspect the deal breaker will be Health and Safety - can you really safely run all that power in a wet environment, and if yes, can you prove it ? - qualified electrician on board and an insurance policy that comes with a cover note to the effect that they are aware of the specific nature of the shoot.

Why london? http://www.ndac.co.uk/ - though the water, while clear, and gloriously natural, is bloody cold so no good unless in wetsuits.

Hi Jason,

For my two penny worth, all I would say is that filming underwater is a huge undertaking with health & safety compliance being rightly 'the' largest and most expensive component. Consequently may I suggest that you really clarify in your own mind what visually you a trying to achieve indeed convey in your planned shots. I note your wish to achieve 'slight vastness' On that all I can say is that thinking big and it will cost you. Where as thinking smaller and thinking more towards close up might significantly be more achievable. I personally have worked at good depths and the simple truth is there's little or no light apart what you take with you in the form of an underwater hand torch or a chemical synalume stick. But Modern Underwater torches with their bright white light led's can be both cheap and amazing at short range. Equally a thoughtfully utilised and angled 4K GoPro, a torch with little or no ambient light bleed from above will look exactly (I promise you) the same as if you are in mid ocean and down at 70 metres.
So think about what you actually need very carefully, improvise & fake it where you can but do so safely. Always, always, always put the safety and well being of your team first.

A company I am aware of possibly still operating near Southampton that used to be called 'H2O films' might be worth a contact - should you still wish to go Vast! (Bye the way I'm not affiliated in anyway to that company)
Anyway good luck & be safe.

Hello Jason,

Did you find a place to shoot underwater eventually?

Thanks

Emre
