INDEXShooting with an iphone 5s

Hi guys
We're shooting a mock/documentary using an iphone 5s, a gopro, and maybe using an iphone 4 for some extra angles here and there. I've read that Filmicpro is a good app for getting more control on the iphone, but that it crashes a lot. Has anyone got any thoughts on this or tips for other apps or indeed tips for getting the best out of the iphone 5s? thanks.

If I'm just messing around doing nothing special I tend to stick to the native app, which is as you say at 30fps.
Yeah if you want a more filmic look, then go for the 24fps. However if you're filming on the fly and need to film quick as you can you might just be better off using the native app. Any of the third party apps take longer to open and set up. As you probably know you can open the iPhone's own camera from the lock screen. If you do this just make you set your GoPro to 30fps too. You want all your cameras uniform fps.

thanks again guys. Yes, I didn't appreciate you had to film everything at the same fps Ryan... I'd thought about having the more filmic look for some bits, and a more TV look for other bits, but maybe we should try and do that with the colour grade or something.

I use one called MoviePro+. I found filmic pro crashed a lot. But essentially it's the same thing.
You do get more control. Can choose frame rate, separate focus and aperture settings etc.
Although these apps open up the possibility to record audio through the iPhone mic (the native app doesn't support this) you will need to get a preamp to make it work. I've used the irig. But ultimately I would recommend just recording your audio separately and syncing later.
Also, if you have the budget, get yourself a steadicam smoothee with iPhone 5s and gopro adapters. Great fun.
Good luck.

thanks Ryan! I might just give that one a go. I've read it's a bit simpler to use maybe as well, which is good as I'm not a DOP and most of the time we'll be filming stuff on the fly. Do you recommend filming at 24 frames - I'd like to give it a more filmic look if possible. The iphone defaults to 30 is that right? that's a noticeable difference right? cheers

I've used FilmicPro and it's good, but I've just used Videon and I think it's even better with Focus & exposure and White Balance control. Also settings for Resolution, Frame rate, audio and microphone.
Haven't tried MoviePro+ will try that today!
