SHould Film Festivals adopt "Best Business Practices"

12 years, 2 months ago - Tyrone D Murphy

The Universal Film & Festival Organization promotes best business practices for film festivals, now with 195 members festivals, do you think that filmmakers should support this.

We believe that filmmakers are actually in control and they just don't know it, no festivals without films, so what is your opinion

THE UK FILM FESTIVAL is a member of UFFO and as a filmmaker and artistic director of the festival I totally support this idea of best business practices.
Any festival worth its salt will hopefully already know what these are and go beyond the minimum levels both in ethics and respect for filmmakers. Filmmakers have power and will vote with their feet if unfairly treated. What goes around comes around.

The key is information to filmmakers can make an informed choice. I've narrowly avoided a few scam festivals, but then I do tend to look quite closely, read the terms and conditions of submission etc.

It's all very well having a code of best practice, but there needs to be some oversight so that it can be seen that festivals are abiding by the code. Also, some otherwise very good festivals may have legitimate sticking points - out of curiosity have any contacted you and said 'we'd love to sign up, but this clause is a bit of a problem for us'? And have the codes evolved as a result?

Perhaps some sort of peer review process, where filmmakers give feedback on their experiences would work well? This would also hopefully give people an opportunity to applaud best practice and festivals who are really putting in the effort to make a great event.

Slightly off topic, but how do you see your code of practic dovetailing (or not) with things like the FIAPF codes of practice?
