Sound editing / Mixing / Foley estimates in the UK

6 years, 3 months ago - Tiago Teixeira

Hi all,

I'm producing the post of a 17-minute artsy-horror short film shot in the UK and I'm having trouble figuring out how much I should set aside for the sound design / mixing / foley? I've asked for estimates from some professionals, but I'm always faced with 'how much you have put aside for sound' question. What would be a fair amount for a self-funded, non-profit short film?

Thank you for your help and hope you have great weekend.

Hi Tiago,

As someone who runs an Audio Post Facility, I can tell you that response is not what you should expect. We work on short films all the time and there definitely is a clear answer.

Feel free to email me on alex@344audio.com and I can give you a very clear idea of rates and expectations.

Kind regards,

Hi Tiago,

It's great that you should be asking that question at all. So many film makers don't really consider the post production sound costs when budgetting their films and end up blowing all of their funds on production... This, of course, leads to compromises at the post production stage and, when you consider that sound and music make up 50% of the film, you start to ask yourself, why would anyone want to treat their art in that way....?
I'm sure Alex will be able to give you much more of an idea of the value of Post Production Sound, but if you want a second opinion, (or if anyone needs sound help in the South West) then it's: alan@soundattitude.net

Best wishes,

Alan
