Starting a documentary production company

8 years, 6 months ago - Luis Murrighile

Hello everyone,
I'm a videographer/editor based in London. All my life I've filmed and edited very different videos and documentaries. From wedding videos to documentaries on social issues.
I have dedicated the past years on music and now I want to have more credibility in the things I'm doing: I would like to start a company that will focus on lifestyle documentaries (musicians mostly but also contemporary artists).

I've always worked as freelancer or for small agencies and I know nothing about it.
I already know I'm not gonna make much money out of it at the beginning, but I don't care, I just want to deliver high quality products. So it's better to set up a video production company with a lawyer, business consultant, etc, or open a collective?
For me it's more important having good people around me, with ideas and passion than business men focus on money. But I guess you have to pass through the business thing if you wanna have some credibility.

I'm looking forwards to hear any advices.
Thanks

Hi Luis, did you ever set up that company?

Hi Luis,

I must have made about 80+ television documentaries over a 20 year period until I was sick of them. There is of course a new, very highly glossy product on Netflix and the streamers etc. But a good story is still a good story.

I've never ran a doc company per se, but I certainly know how to make them, and with one eye closed. Happy to talk to you or help you or give advice in anyway I can if you want? I also won awards too and had dozens of write ups in the press of stuff I made.

Very best,

Richard Harrison
