Stills photography

10 years, 7 months ago - Marcus Ebanks

I think this would mainly go to the Film Directors/Producers with this, but where do you normally go to look for stills photographers for your films if you ever do?

I have done stills photography in the past which can be alot of fun to document the makings and behind the scenes stills from a set, and I was wondering where you normally go to source your still photographers and what you usually require from them.

Many thanks!
Marcus

Hi Paddy thanks for the response,

I had a look at camera sound blimps and they are really expensive! Even renting one!

Hi Marcus,

These days there's often enough people with decent cameras kicking around that general documentation isn't hard to get covered. Actual production stills are a little tougher, and I'd generally look to the EPK/publicity department to take the lead and either find someone or apply an artistic eye.

One thing that's somewhat helpful is a soundproofed enclosure for your camera - that allows you to shoot during takes, when the lighting is right, makeup is right, and you don't hold up proceedings getting people to pose and recreate scenes/setups. When you're spending thousands of pounds an hour for shooting time, you can't afford to hold it up for stills, so that might be an interesting niche to get started?
