Stupid mistake#1: Mixed frame rates issue

8 years, 3 months ago - Thomas Olivier

Hi, I know there a lot about that issue online but there's maybe a bit too much so I'm a little confused...

I've shot a full 12 mins short film in 23.976 fps and like an idiot, on the very last day of shoot I captured everything in 25 fps... I'm doing a classic lossless proxy workflow going back and forth between resolve / premiere / after effects.

What can i do to avoid myself (I'm also colourist) and the editor a big nightmare ?

(My files are cDNG if it changes anything)

Thanks in advance

I don't know those bits of software, but a good NLE won't object to mixed framerates on the timeline, and you can then transcode the final assembly to a consistent framerate for the grade.

Thankfully you didn't shoot 30fps!

Tell your editor straight away.

Just make sure your NLE timeline/project timebase is set to 23.976, and then conform your 25fps footage to that. The slight speed slowdown won't be noticeable for 99% of people. You may want to pitch up the audio slightly, but again the majority of people won't notice if you don't!

Thanks very much guys! I told the editor apparently it's working fine with a mixed frame rate on the same première timeline... yep technology must've evolved since the last time I tried dealing with that issue so... happy days!

Thanks very much for that :)
