INDEXSuggestions for back up external hard drives?
10 years, 10 months ago - Allie Ryan
I need to back up 10 Tb of footage. Currently they are on G-Raids. In the past I bought Western Digital Elements external hard drives, but I thought I ask before buying / making another investment in external hard drives.
Thanks,
Allie

On the last project we doubled up on 4TB USB3 Seagate drives from PC World- 2 copies of everything, kept in 2 separate locations, cheap at £89 each inc VAT. Worked a treat.

I've got loads of WD elements 2TB drives (about £70 each) which I use for archive. I did have one fail a while ago but in a recoverable way (I could move the data off but no longer write/modify). Second all the advice about double back ups. I always keep 2 backups and a working version of live projects. When they're complete I tend to only keep one archive of the raw footage if I'm pretty sure I'll never need it again...

I'll second the Seagate drives. Nice thing about them is they come with USB3 ports. Your machine may not use USB3 yet, but when you do you'll appreciate having them.

I just go for cheap internal drives and a dock (USB/Thunderbolt/SATA--whatever you like). They are easier to shelve this way. All hard drives fail--making brand/model generalizations is dubious--so double backup always, and makes sure your backup drives don't live connected to your computer.
NB: For actual video editing you need drives with good cooling systems (heat is the biggest killer of HDDs)--that's why G-Drive is preferred over say a My Book; plus consumer drives often fudge/obscure their speed ratings.

Allie,
worked on productions with G raids I tend use 4t WD EHD - the NAS ones sound good. £150 from amazon. that is a lot of raw material!
hope it helps.
John
