Taking 16mm film through Ben Gurion airport Tel Aviv as hand luggage: Any advice?

11 years, 5 months ago - Kate Parker

I need to take 15 x 400ft rolls of 16mm film through security at Ben Gurion airport, Tel Aviv. There are no suppliers in Tel Aviv, and Kodak say it will be OK as hand luggage, but I am nervous! Does anyone have any experience of this?

You take your changing bag and the guard goes into the bag with you to feel the film inside the cans.

Contact the airline. They will aid you in every way to get the film safely to your destination.

I take it you've never been to Israel. You're not landing at a police state airport. Israel's not a war zone. You'll get there, they'll search your bags like anywhere else, and as film rolls are no more illegal in Israel than the UK, they won't be confiscated.

you would be better off sending them to your destination address in tel aviv via post.
of course the airport security staff understands not to expose the films to light, but if you come across the 'wrong dude' or you look islamic, or an 'international' (basically pro-palestinian westerner) they might do it just to give you hard times.
i've had this experience with 8mm kodak film at ben gurion airport.
however, if they just scan the cans through scanning machine and don't actually open them, it shouldn't be damaging the film.
