Telecine Advice - Remastering an old S16 reel

4 years, 9 months ago - Cavan McLaughlin

I have an old promotional music video from 14 years ago I have been thinking about remastering. Although it was shot on s16mm, given it was in 2006 it was only telecined to 625/50, so I only have an anamorphic SD master. I was thinking about getting it rescanned to at least 4K, maybe 6K, but I need it to be as affordable as possible, it's only 1200ft so I was hoping this wouldn't be too expensive. I am also aware that after 14 years without proper storage the film isn't 100% guaranteed any more. I don't want to outlay the money to find out I have a problematic amount of film damage. I am looking for suggestions, recommendations etc.

Thanks!

Hi Cavan, I've gone back and had S16 re-scanned, its usually quite fun as you find quality that was lost in the original scan.

I can't recomend who to use, though I could ask around, as I used to use my regular lab i-Dalies. But any post house with a Spirit TK will be able to do it for you - alternatively there are some really creative independent guys out there.

Regarding cost, just doing at 2K, even HD which will still be a major jump from your SD copy - when you scan S16 higher, all you really doing is scanning the grain, you may want that though, people are scanning Super 8 at 4K now.

If you have stored your film somewhere normal, like a closet or something, it should be fine and will probably be supprisingly good quality, just tell your service how old the film is so they know what the are dealing with.

Sure it will look great,

Andy
