INDEXThe Cruelty of Beauty - Short Film
10 years ago - Simon Fox
Hi all, my name is Simon Fox, I'm a filmmaker from Edinburgh and we've just launched the crowdfunding campaign for a new short film titled The Cruelty of Beauty. The story focuses on an up and coming model named Sarah Falls, and the different ways in which society treat her, the positives and negatives in her life through her career choice and also just for being a female in general.
We have a promotional trailer online alongside information about the film, the cast and the crew.
If you've got a few moments we'd really appreciate you taking the time to look it over. Any feedback is welcome, and we'll be happy to answer any questions!

Hi Simon, good point but you're OK if you've sent a private link or personal download with a unique password. Eligibility for festivals is only compromised if the short is "published" publicly online. I have completed around 20 shorts including BAFTA nominated and award winning shorts, so I follow these things closely.

@Hank Starrs I can see where you're coming from, and I will look at lowering the Special Thanks perk, though we can't change the 'name in the credits' Perk as someone has already claimed it.
In regards to digital downloads though, the reason why we can't have these on offer for such a low cost is because it can affect our eligibility for film festivals, so we need to keep the viewing of the finished film to being exclusive for now. Once it's done its run of festivals though we'll be putting it out for public viewing.

Hi Simon, yes I believe it's around 17%-20%. If the rewards are priced too high folks won't buy them so still better to drop the prices. I would add a download or MP4/QuickTime of your film to all rewards from £10 and above.
I've run successful campaigns on Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Our recent Kickstarter campaign offered a feature length digital download for £10 and this was easily the most popular reward. The campaign made £45,000. Overpriced rewards are the biggest stumbling block for crowdfunders. Best,Hank

Hi Simon, Your rewards are way overpriced. People make the mistake of thinking that Indiegogo is a charity. Definitely there's an element of altruism in buying a film that hasn't been made and has all-unknown talent involved, but Indiegogo is a presale marketplace - and a very competitive one. If a person can buy a short film on iTunes for £3.50 they are not going to pay £5 for a shout out or £10 for a screen credit. All your smaller rewards are much too expensive. Address this and you'll do better. Good luck! Hank

Hi Hank,
Thanks for taking the time to give us some feedback. We did look at other crowdfunders to get an idea for the perks and prices, and this was generally the usual pricing for such perks.
Unfortunately as IndieGoGo takes a percentage of each donation, having such a low priced perk wouldn't be of any benefit to the production, even if it encouraged more people to donate.
Again thanks for the input, it's appreciated.
