Thoughts on 600d for film?

11 years, 6 months ago - Michael Doyle

I'm torn between the 600 and the 6d - better price and packages for the 600d and the footage does look fantastic, I believe the 60d and 600 are the same but with different casings? i'm on a budget so i'm leaning more towards the 600!

Your opinions would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

The 600D has an 18MPx sensor - for HD video you're only using a couple of million pixels of those 18, so don't be worried about pixelcount, which is a red herring.

It's probably a 2/3 sensor, so slightly more sizzling in low-light conditions but more than good enough for most drama situations where you'll be controlling the light anyway.

Did you mean the 60d or the 6d? (You mention both). The 6d has a full frame sensor so there's benefit there in terms of low light shooting, depth of field and shooting wide angle (no crop factor). If you have the money and the 6 is an option I'd go there. I shoot on the 7d and the 550d. There's really no difference in the footage (same sensor) but the additional controls and flexibility (especially having more ISO settings) make the 7d much more useful. Id say if you're comparing the 600 and 60 on a tight budget, you'll get very similar footage - might be worth saving pennies to buy better glass? A great camera with a crap lens is a waste! If the price difference allows you money to get better lenses I'd definitely get the cheaper camera (body only) and some decent glass

Miichael,

I certain agree with the issue. If am honest I would if you budget could aford it go for the 6D partly to the MP resolution 600D is very consumer designed t depends on the output platform you going to broadcast it. the 6D 60D are better for resolution reasons. I try to stay clear of the lower end for production work and favour the 5d MK2 for potography work as near as one tends to super end quality.

the 5D MK 2/3 are most in demand. It depends on your end pipleline.

Hope this is usefu and best of luck with filming.

I realise my answer above is riddled with contradictions :-). Basically the extra bells and whistles on the 60 d will be useful, but the footage will look the same if you're comparing like for like settings with the 600.

PS - don't forget that the 600D, the 550D, and frankly even most handycams technically are waaaaaaay more advanced than the cameras available to almost all of the greatest directors and cinematographers for almost all of the greatest movies ever made. Don't get too hung up on technical specs, work instead on getting the script and performance right. I'll watch a great film shot on SD over a load of 4k cruft which is churned out. '28 Days Later', for instance, was shot on DV (which was always a lousy, if convenient, format) but is a compelling film.

I own the 600d. Its a fantastic camera. Dont forget to get Magic Lantern and try to stay away for "flat" colours/ cinestyle profile. Its all bull. Like most cameras you need light. Lots of it unless you like noise.
