Timing a crowdfunder

12 years, 8 months ago - David Graham Scott

Hi Shooters

After 2 years I'm at the stage of logging my tapes (yes I use good old fashioned tapes and not those daft cards). Making a follow-up feature docu to my 2004 film called Detox or Die (which has gone viral since being posted on the internet!)

Anyway, I'm going to crowdfund for some post-production funds and I have a vast network of interested people to draw upon. My issue is this: Is this a bad time of year to start a crowdfunder? What with Xmas coming up and folk being broke in Jan. Or perhaps people would be more generous over the festive period?

Any thoughts??

Many regards as usual.

Thanks for that, John!! Good to hear from someone in the same boat even though we are both struggling to get our projects finished.
The one card I have up my sleeve is a large acknowledgement from many different sources re my prequel film. I can tap into the current 'war on drugs' phenomenon and the immense possibilities offered by the subject of the film, the radical drug detox agent called ibogaine.
I have a large number of Facebook friends who know exactly what I'm trying to achieve. I guess if even a small fraction of them give to the project then that still could raise a grand or two. Every little helps as the saying goes!
I've also got what's called 'fiscal sponsorship' from an organisation in the US called MAPS, made up of a variety of medical professionals. Not sure how much that will help though. Have you heard of fiscal sponsorship at all? Its where a charity based organisation oversees funding activities and can attract sponsors who might be unwilling to donate to an unknown individual or production company.
My film is issue based & will, to a certain extent, be a campaigning film. Hopefully I can tap into a large area of interested parties.
Must keep in touch with you. You can connect with me on FB if you like. Just type my full name in and you'll find me!!
Cheers
David

I wish I had the answer to this question too as I am in a similar position. Just started editing process after a long time gathering but have run out of money which is slowing things down massively. I would seek stories from twitter who have already attempted crowdfunding in december and january to see if there is a big difference. Crowdfunding is massively affected by other factors though so would have to take into account so not as to mislead yourself. Unless you are already well known and have good email lists of followers etc and a bunch of sympathetic organisations behind you, you can only ask small. For people who are well known they can be more demanding. Also the quality of your pitch video and what you are offering in bonuses seems to make a lot of difference. Have been investigating myself as time is approaching. If you tweet me on https://twitter.com/OrwellUpgraded I can pass on tweeters who have already done campaigns who might be more reliable advice wise.
