Tips on the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2013

I'm hoping to go to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for the first time this year and was just wanting any general info / tips anyone can give e.g. how many days will I need at the festival? Are there any must-see shows this year? Do most people buy tickets when they're released on May 30th or wait until the festival itself when they might be cheaper?
