INDEXTrying to create my editing showreel but don't have any credits
4 years, 11 months ago - Isabelle Ramsay
Hello, I wanted to get some advice on creating an editing showreel.
I am still very much at a junior/entry level position in the industry. I worked as an IO/Edit assistant last year for 6 months and a few months this year but didn't create anything that I could add onto my showreel
I have done some short videos for university projects back in 2018, some short 'promotional' videos for a building contractors company and a reel for a hair and makeup artist, so it is pretty short and not very consistent.
However I was wondering if it would be good to include personal projects into this reel? something which shows off what I can do even if it is not credited and I use stock footage, Youtube videos etc within it?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Hi Isabelle,
My advice would be, seeing as this is your editing reel this is really a great opportunity to show off what you can do as an editor.
The challenge is, although you don't have clear things to show as you said, how you tie up all the things you have gor will show off your skills.
I would suggest making the reel more like an advert- find a dynamic track that will cut together well with the music and bullet point some of your skills.
For instance- Premiere Pro. Final Cut Pro X. Avid. You could have the logos pop up one after the other.
Then. Narrative. Commercial. Documentary. etc...
Personal projects are fine. I think the most important thing is to show off your skills via the reel. If you can edit a good reel, you will show off how good an editor you are!
This is Wild Street's showreel- I like how they put the text on the screen to show off what they do, so it's clear:

Best of luck

Hi Isabelle
I used to manage a team of editors in an agency and I would often be sent editor showreels. It's quite hard to put together an edit of edits, but everything Corry has said above is great.
As someone who has employed unknown editors based on reels for entry level freelance edit gigs, I simply want to know that you can use whichever program I'm going to put you on, and that you can put together a sexy little edit. So I'd advise you to keep it succinct and then go hit up loads of ad agencies to see it they need any editors and get some trial days cutting mood films...
Good luck!
Simon
