TVOD options for self-distribution?

2 years, 6 months ago - SP User

Does anyone have any recent experience of using Transactional Video on Demand services for self-distribution?

My feature film 'Young Hearts Run Free' (made years ago) is on various channels via an aggregator (FilmHub) but I am looking for a simple service to make it available as a one-off on my own website.
I think I've narrowed it down to Gumroad or Vimeo on Demand (but their prices are complicated and potentially large).

Anyone got any experience of this?
Thank you

I use FilmHub and I use Gumroad. I just wish Gumroad has a TV app so folks can watch movies easily on their TV's. Vimeo has a TV app, but I cancelled Vimeo due to peoples buying habits, folks don't seem to want to use Vimeo to buy/watch movies, especially the numbers needed to cover the yearly Vimeo fees! So out of the two I do recommend Gumroad as there are no upfront costs and my sales have been pretty good.
Hope that helps.

Hi Phil,
Thanks for your response.
Your Gumroad looks great. I think I'll go with that.
Digging deep into Vimeo it seems like they might have an option with no upfront costs but only if your video is less than 1 hour.

I used to use Distrify Player with it years ago until they went bust. Shame, because that was a great idea (as was Dynamo player).

I used Gumroad as an extra revenue stream while using an aggregator to get my film on streaming sites, I didn't want to rely on just one platform.
Vimeo was a dead-zone for me compared to everywhere else, but you may have better luck. However I personally wouldn't touch Vimeo with a barge pole now, just because it does seem to be a dead zone from a customer/sales point of view.
You have to give folks a really good reason to get their card out, sign up to an account, to then watch your film - whereas they have plenty of ways to watch movies with no effort.
Good luck, I hope it all goes well.

Amazon is the leading TVOD platform so you should consider it. Gumroad is a tech platform and Vimeo is a platform that targets film-makers and requires membership, these are not popular platforms for the average viewer. You will also discover that many viewers are reluctant to release their credit card info for a one-off purchase from an unfamiliar platform, but most of them will already have Amazon Prime accounts. In case you don't know, the Amazon split is 50/50, but to generate revenue you will need to drive traffic.

Hello,

We have very neat and great On Demand service.
Please have look at our EditHouse On Demand platform and let me know if you are interested.
Our service includes also any Disc formats if you wish to sell it on any physical media too, plus the additional Soundtrack sales etc.. All produced on demand without the need to have a stock.
This is a simple system with very clear pricing structure and is certainly cheaper than Vimeo.

Hi Darren,
How much work is it/what criteria do you have to check, to get your shorts onto Amazon Prime?
Thanks,
James
