Unsolicited scripts

1 year ago - Damon Simms

Hi guys I have a couple of people willing to take a look at a script I’ve produced but it is unsolicited- the people who I’ve been invited to send it too are both very reputable. Is there any risks I need to consider before sending?

How can it be unsolicited if you have been invited to send it?

Hi Damon,
Can you clarify a few things for us, please?

When you say it's a script you've produced, that to me would mean it's been filmed already. Do you mean the script has been filmed, or by 'produced' do you mean you've written it?

As per the other comment, it can't be unsolicited if they've asked for it. Do you mean you contacted them without any prompt, and then they've replied asking to see it? Or, have they made the initial contact with you?

As long as you have proof that it's your script (you've emailed it to yourself before even sending people the logline) then you should be fine.

Hi James - yes I contacted them and explained who I was due to the fact that I had in the past had interest for a couple of scripts I have written. They then said I could send my latest over for them to consider.

Hi, I don't see any issue with that.
Send them the script and get on with your career.

I'd refrain from describing it as a 'produced' script because that suggests that it's already been filmed. Just describe it as a script you've written.

I think he meant “produced” means “written” not shot, and I read it as that, and “unsolicited” means he sent it but it hadn’t been requested. Many have done that. All writers are in the same boat and if we waited for someone to request our script, we’d wait forever and yes, have to be pushy! I have 9 different genres all in Final Draft in various stages of undress but only two are ready to go and yes, a producer has actually requested to read one, so that has gone. Another is a sitcom and rejected on the grounds that all sitcoms today “have to be family based” whatever that means and mine has a setup similar (but totally different) the “Are You Being Served”, ie a group of people working together, and so not family based, which is why it was rejected. I’ve done a complete package with a first episode plus character descriptions and plot outlines for the next 6 episodes BUT not family based!!?

Reading your post again, I think I may have misunderstood. Do you actually mean that someone contacted you out of the blue and asked to see the script?

In the biz, "unsolicited" usually means a writer sending a script to, say, a producer, without any request to do so. So do please clarify your situation.

Considering the typos in this post, I'd definitely suggest a thorough proofread before sending your script to anyone ;)
