INDEXUsing smart phones to replace radio Mics
11 years ago - ANDY LEWIS
There was a discussion recently about using multiple personal microphones on set. Radio Mics would not be cost effective for most of us on Shooting People. I liked this idea as I have only one radio mic chanel in my kit. I tried using a Rode smart lav. Advertised as fitting the bill for this purpose. Had I bothered to read the negative reviews on Amazon ( they refunded promptly) I would not have bought it. The reviews were right the noise level is way too high, that's not the only problem. Rode insist it was a faulty microphone and would have replaced it. They are upgrading to the smart lav+ but it's not on sale as I write this. Anyway, I recommend buying an iRig pre. (£35) It's for using broadcast microphones with XLR connectors into a smart phone. It has a gain control, earphone socket and 48v phantom. I loaded iRecord as the app on the iPhone because it gives the facility to email the finished sound file. So it can be sent direct to the editor. No messing about with SDHC cards. FcpX easily syncs it up with the camera file. In my opinion using non broadcast Mics is foolish. I only ever use the Sennheiser 416 and Tram Tr50
So I don't need to do anything other than level changes in the edit. Call it recording raw sound. I will be trying out my old Sony lavaliers on my iPhone
