Thanks for the responses. That’s an array of talent. By way of explanation, we’re two vegans running a creative campaigns company Helloup.co.uk as well as film studio hire space upstudios.co.uk. We have the expertise and the facilities to make great content, and are pretty self sufficient for most projects, but realise it takes a team to do the best work. We’re interested in making compelling films, long or short, funny or dramatic, fiction or factual, to promote the vegan lifestyle, be it on an environmental, ethical or health basis.

Why do it? It would be nice to think it would lead to live projects, being fully vegan could be a great USP for the growing number of companies looking to tap into the flourishing vegan market, but for starters it would be enough for us just to make great stuff, shift People’s perspective a bit, and have fun doing it.

How? We can provide creative, although we see this as very collaborative. We can also provide production and post production expertise/facilities, studio space, lights, cameras etc. I can also fill the role of DOP and camera op along with editing, grading and vfx.

That’s the idea in a nutshell. What do you think?

Brilliant idea. What's the plan for connecting? Do we do some kind of group call where we can all discuss ideas and get acquainted?

Love the idea of fully vegan projects and what kind of delicious food we would have on set! Also the sustainability side of things and the doors it opens there.

On board wholeheartedly.

Hi all. Yes, maybe a super casual zoom call would be a good way to kick things off and get a rough idea on what we can achieve with the resources we have. I can set that up for a time that suits us best. So, anyone who wants to jump in, please email me at craig@helloup.co.uk and we’ll take it from there.

Wouldn’t a vegan exclusive cohort hinder any potential non-vegan to be opened to the idea of veganism?
Can you not remain entirely vegan friendly without having to create an echo chamber? - And still have a strong USP. Just a thought.

I've set up a Facebook group called Vegan Filmmakers. There are already a few similar groups but they appear to be either London only or International. I envisage there's space for a current UK based group. It's possibly a good place to introduce yourself, connect with other vegans in the field and maybe pitch ideas and thoughts. Jump in...

Vegans can’t make films! Film is made from gelatine which is extracted from hooves…

Response from 2 years, 9 months ago - Franz von Habsburg FBKS MSc SHOW

2 years, 9 months ago - Craig Wilkinson

Your're right Franz in that film contains gelatine. I suspect you're comment is a bit mischievous as I'm sure you are aware Red, Arri, Sony etc. all make digital cameras that can be used by Vegans, and more than 90% of Hollywood films are shot digital.

Hi Craig,
This is a lovely idea! Please keep me informed.
Just a note, as a vegan and an insulin dependent diabetic, food is always a worry for me.
When producing our zombie feature film "Alive (2023)", - which we started filming at the end of 2019 and then (interrupted by the pandemic) finally finished in early 2021, - after checking everyone's allergies, I decided I would make sure that the food was exclusively vegetarian (mostly vegan) and even tasked the excellent caterer (for a weeks long location shoot) that all food also needed to be mostly vegan, but maybe a vegetarian option.
There were no complaints about the food!
Also, our main actors who played the zombies were vegetarian, so we used the slow cooked watermelon for the flesh...
