View Disparity.

A query for Shooting People staff, really, but thought it could potentially benefit anyone who has a film on here.

With regards to the number of views for each film on the SP 'Leaderboard'; how does that work?

We embed from YouTube or Vimeo into the site, and so the number of plays that the film receives should roughly correlate to the Stats provided by one of those sites. But that doesn't appear to be the case.

At the time of writing, my film has allegedly had 654 views. But Vimeo does not reflect that. In fact, it's 41 according to Vimeo. If views on SP amounted to the number of people simply opening the page, then the Embed figure would correlate, but - again - it does not (in my case, it's 222).

So, as much as I'd love to imagine that 654 people have clicked on my film (and not voted or voted), that doesn't seem to be happening. And it doesn't appear to be the case that someone simply opening the page counts as a view either (or that would be reflected in Vimeo's 'Embed' Stat).

Can someone please clarify this? I mean, the number itself doesn't matter, but inflated numbers are a bit silly.

Thank you.

Oh dear - an error in this page? Would you mind emailing me the details of what happened when you tried it, and telling me what browser, pc or mac you are using? Sorry!

Hiya.

Hope you are all well?

Could I just clarify that the film currently in 1st position in the film of the month competition is ineligible for this month, despite being listed in first place?

I only ask as my film Hula Girl is currently sat in 6th position, just outside the top 5. Is there any way of removing the ineligible video (if it is indeed ineligible) from the leader board to show everyone's true positions (and move us in to 5th place and give us a link to our film on the front page of the main competition page)

Thanks so much and keep up the great work.

Asheq hi, thanks for bringing this up. Our tech team are going to dig into some more analytics. From a quick look, it does look like the views are over counting - or, at least, what should count as exact real page views are counting higher because we haven't done enough work on excluding bots and search engines polling the site. We'll down tools on other stuff and focus on sorting this next week.
Thanks
Cath

Hi Asheq,

Thanks for flagging this - the film you noticed was in a previous month's Film of the Month competition, and then has been re-uploaded, meaning that the film was automatically re-entered into this month's competition. This happens every now and again, and we normally spot them before anyone else, and make sure the film is removed from the competition - but this time you saw it before us!

We're getting it sorted today, and please be reassured that we keep a close eye on all the entries, and make sure there's a level playing field for everyone.

Just noticed that the winning film in this month's FOTM competition has 220 stars already. Doesn't this put all the other entries at something of a disadvantage? Or has the film really accrued 624 views in a few hours?

Hi Mark,

That's right, Stephanie's updating the site now, so keep an eye on the leaderboard- and thanks for the support :)

Best of luck,
Sarah
