INDEXVimeo playback looking different than the HQ versions that were uploaded?
9 years, 11 months ago - George Brian Glennon
Hi Guys,
We've uploaded HQ versions of a recent trailer I shot to a private Vimeo page to share among the principles before we make it public.
My HQ versions which look great on my computer, look markedly darker on Vimeo. (Gamma issue?)
Does anyone here know what this is a function of, and does anyone have advice for achieving the goal of the public seeing as close to my HQ versions as possible.
Thanks for any insight.
George

Hi Claire,
My editor would have all the technical information. I don't know or have any of that.
I'll get that at my next editing session and let you know the details.
Thanks

Ross and Claire,
My editor would have the technical info.
The Vimeo comps are showing as described on multiple computers/locations so it is not local. This was edited in Premier Pro, and the HQ's back from the grader look fantastic.
I'll send your advice to my editor. We have to get this sorted before they are released to the public, so I will let you know if your advice has worked or if we find a solution. The Vimeo versions are noticeably darker are obliterating details in night scenes.
Thanks for your insight,
George

Hi George,
Got really frustrated by this myself a while back and searched around online plus emailed support. It's an issue they know but can't do much about apparently due to the many different ways different players and browsers display things. Still, for my peace of mind I now make adjustments so that it looks as close to the original for me at least (on Chrome on a Macbook).
In FCPX I create a compound clip of my entire finished + graded project, and make these colour adjustments:
-2 shadows
+8 mid exposure
+6 global saturation
Then in compressor I add a gamma adjustment of 0.93
Let me know if you think that helps match things, would be interested to know. Or if you find an easier alternative!
cheers,
Ross

Hi George,
What codec have you use for the upload? What are your scopes showing you for the export?
Second, could you post the Vimeo link to verify that it actually has an issue as it may well be you have a Browser/Video Driver incorrect setting which is giving you a local issue and not one seen in other's browsers. H.264 in particular was a problem a while back.
Vimeo is very good at retaining gamma aspects as well as displaying blacks at their correct level. One issue has been people's Nvidia dynamic range setting (if you're using an Nvidia setting). You might like to check that it is set Full dynamic range 0-255, not limited 16-235.
If you are using Nvidia, check the video settings in the Nvidia Control Panel. Should be No Dynamic Contrast Enhancement and set to Full 0-255.
Alternatively, I've sometimes used the Avid DNxHD codec rather than H.264.

Still have no detail and AME Codecs or settings. Have no detail so everything offered is simply speculation. Can't really troubleshoot without more detail and precise knowledge of your workflow
All the best....
