£30,000 prize and you don't want to share it?

Lets get it straight, this competition has a potential £30k prize, whats more it has significant reach to hundreds (thousands?) of cinemas where customers are paying good money to watch product.

Why then do you think it ethically correct to dupe the cast and crew with some kind of collaborative arrangement where you wont share the £30k if you win and doubly to dupe the audience into thinking its an ethical production where everyone shared the prize and everyone was paid.

I can understand collaboration when there is no money available, but when there is £30k at stake I kinda hope people would do the right thing and put it in writing that they'll share the prize. Guess I was wrong.

Exactly - Virgin Media wouldn't let you share out the money amongst the cast and crew, even if you wanted to. It's to make another film with!

The ads I've seen say very prominently that the film is being made for the competition, so they're not 'duping' people.

Oh dear - you've got this one completely wrong and look like a bit of prat.

The 30k prize is to make another film - it's not like the filmmaker is putting 30k in their back pocket!

Completely null argument.

It's not a 30k cash prize. Once winning the contest the filmmaker then pitches their new idea or script to VM/BFI mentors, who collaborate with them on it. The filmmaker isn't given the 30k at any point it's just the budget for their next film which VM holds on to.

When an expenses only film project says "it will be great experience and exposure for you" it usually means the opposite, however Winning VMShorts is an exception.

Remember you're in control of your own careers before saying yes to a project do some research and remember an actor can add any requirements to their contract with a filmmaker or draw up their own.

Wow...I agree with you Mark. Anyone who works on a freebie deserves a slice of the cake! What kind of unethical being would scoop a prize and not share at least some of it? Not my kind of person for sure!
