Hello Again to all of you!!
This may sound like the beginnings of every aspiring albeit delusional voiceover artist's career, but I have been told many many times down the years that I should look into doing some voiceover work - first time I was told was way back in my teens, so it's not like someone told me last week and the person next to them agreed, that is not how I build up momentum.
Now, I have somewhat of an idea of how to go about it as I have recently met a voiceover artist by chance and asked him for advice. My wobble at the moment is where to start in terms of what sort of content I should be putting into my demo reel. I was told to keep such reels concise and to-the-point, but also feel that I should add some diversity and originality to it.
Does anyone have any ideas or monologues that I could demo for them and use to record the demo-reel? Failing that, any advice on what would be good to put in there?
Would be great to get some feedback on the subject, and apologies if you all feel I am spamming you having posted two questions in the last 10 minutes or so...!
All the best,
Ian

Hi Ian
If you haven't already, you should visit:-
www.theshowreel.com
I recorded my voicereel with them, a while ago now, but couldn't recommend them highly enough. They will advise you on content and provide you with reams of scripts to go through.
All the best,
Georgina

Hi Ian
As someone who has commissioned voiceovers for hundreds of radio commercials, finding the right voice is time consuming. Usually you'll listen to maybe 20-30 seconds, if it's good, you'll stay listening. So a showreel has to grab you right from the first second. What you need is about 90 secs (max) that show a variety of character voices, if you have them (preferably in a blinding script, preferably funny/ear catching) plus about 90 seconds of different prose readings (not funny, but clever). Also be careful of infringing copyright so avoid reading prose from books less than 70 years old or you can get slapped with a writ if found out. I have helped several actor friends create reels so I know what works too. But one word of caution: like most things in our SP world, it is massively over-subscribed. You will also need a good agent e.g. Hobsons,Flamingo but there are dozens of specialists. COntact me if you need more.
Good luck
