Why wouldn't you suggest Lightworks?! Open source and more movies and TV has been cut on it than anything but possibly AVID (who also offer a free version!)

LightWorks is not open source, though it's quite affordable. There was a time when it was the bee's knees of editing, but that torch has passed to Avid MC now.
Today's big up and comer is Resolve, with HitFilm gaining some pro-oriented features like AAF import/export soon.

Ah fair enough - it was on their roadmap to do, but they never seem to have actually done it. It certainly has a very usable free tier, at least!
And considering what I've paid Avid over the years, it's great to see the free tier out-classes some of what I used to pay a fortune for back in the day!
I knew some of the HitFilm guys back when it was FXHome, showed a lot of promise so that's good to hear.
