We need to add burns and cuts to an actors face, do we use a mask, prosthetics or make up?

6 years, 6 months ago - imran naushad

One of our characters aged 40:50 endures a torture scene where the following effects would need to be applied.

1 - two paper cuts across his left cheek
2 - his left eye brow is singed off by a blow torch.

Can anyone recommend any ideas or suggest ways we can achieve this? Bare in mind this is for a feature film so what method would be the most effective. Prosthetic, Face mask or Make up?

Hi Imran,

Sounds like you would benefit from having a Make-up Artist as part of your team. You can always advertise for one through the Production part of the site. You can do this by clicking on the navigation ‘Production’ > ‘Get People’ (https://shootingpeople.org/production/people).

Once you’ve completed your post, the project will be available to view on the site in the Production directory and will be published in the bulletins.

Good luck with it.

Hi Imran, answers depend on,
what sort of a budget do you have?
do you need close ups of the damage?
how hi-def are your cameras?
Paper cuts are not difficult. To start with they are thin red lines. They may become pinkish around the skin, though if your man is scared enough he will be very pale and this won't show. If they are deep (unlikely, paper is no blade to go through flesh) beads of blood may appear.
A singe/burn effect is a bit harder. Is your actor latex tolerant? You are working near eyes so be very careful. Layer latex over the eyebrow, flattening it. The latex will glue some fine singed hair follicles in place. Add make up. If you are low budget not too hi-def non close-up you can experiment and do this yourself. As budget, def, and close up change, you will need an experienced make up artist, who will also deal with the nuances of shock as the torture progresses. Prosthetics/face masks are getting cheaper, but in my opinion working on the actors face gives greater realism and expression. No actors or animals were harmed in the typing of this response. Good luck with it
