INDEXWhat are the insurance options for low-cost kit hires?

Alright guys.
Calm down! It's an exciting topic I know.
For anyone who occasionally rents gear for paid work or short film stuff - say a day's hire on a mid-price camera - what are your personal insurance arrangements?
For jobs where I might like to rent a slightly better camera than my own, I've been put off renting based on the insurance quotes I've been getting. I'm looking now at http://www.essexinsurancebrokers.com/ and it seems that the minimum quote is about £116 - but that fee is the same for a 1 day hire or a 7 day hire.
If I'm only looking at renting £150 worth of gear for the day, it makes me want to not bother!
What are you arrangements? Do you have annual insurance? Are these one-off-cover prices just a necessary evil? Would you expect the client to cover the cost?

If the kit is worth £150, ask the owner if they'll accept a cash bond? It's not worth insuring as the policy excess will probably be £100 or so anyway! You may still need public liability insurance of course.
Alternatively, try Hiscox for business, I have an annual policy covering public liability and upto £10k of kit (hired or my own) for under a tenner a month.

Thanks Paddy. Very useful. Sounds like I need to get myself an annual policy!

It's worth looking into - with such short hires for such low values, you'll be running into minimum premiums doing it one at a time. The Essex guys might be able to suggest an annual policy for you too
