What are the rates of script reader?

6 years, 2 months ago - David Knight

Hi all

I've finished my first draft of a short film i'm considering putting forward to the BFI Network for funding and I'm thinking of hiring a script reader to get there professional opinion. As i've never used a script reader before i was wondering what rates i could expect?

i've seen in online forums most script readers rates start about £50 for a ten page script? from everyones experience is this about right?

Many thanks

IMO a LOT of script reader services are simply economic fantasyland and should be avoided.

$279 for :-

For feature film screenplays, pilots, and teleplays
3 script readers read your script and provide coverage
18-24 pages Script Notes from 3 different readers
(Approx. 3600 words / single-spaced)
1 Logline and Synopsis
THREE Script Reader Scoresheets
3 Recommendations
9 Script Reader Follow-Up Questions
Approx. 72-hour turnaround

So, if the company takes $39, that leave 3 readers on $80 each. So that's $80 for a job that, if they take it seriously, takes 1.5-2 days for a feature.

If I wanted a script read, I'd ask around - here is good - and try and find someone who has the right background and pay them a reasonable amount for the time it will take.

I have done script reading for friends, (I know what they are aiming at, and they know I will pull no punches,) but it's not something I charge for. If you have someone like that, that's where I'd start. Esp for a short.

Hi David. Hope you're well. I'm a writer and director and was nominated for a BAFTA for this short film https://robbiemccallum.myportfolio.com/rank-short-film
There are a bunch of other shorts on the site too

I'll happily read your short for free and maybe you can read and give feedback on one of my projects. Shooters should be helping each other out. Let me know, Robbie robbiemccallum@me.com

Hi David,

I agree with Marlom to some degree. I am a script reader, but as someone who has read numerous shorts for friends, I would recommend sending out to a few first, perhaps you know some in the industry who would read it and give you feedback. You could try finding someone on here but you may end up paying them and in my opinion, short scripts are there to get made and get your foot in the door. It's great that you're considering sending it to a reader.

I would also say that since it's only a first draft you should hold off on sending it to professional reader for the moment. The other thing is, readers are often very busy as they are constantly sent scripts so you may not hear from them for a while (most independent readers can take as long as 3-4 months).

I recommend sending it to friends or you could upload it on websites such as https://www.simplyscripts.com & https://www.scriptrevolution.com which are free to use.

Hi David - I'm a writer and script reviewer, with several story-led shorts to my name. I'll give you notes on a short screenplay for £1/page (min £10). I'm strong on story structure in the short form, so if your film aims to tell a tale with a beginning, middle and end, you could do worse! Quick turnround, too.
