INDEXWhat Do You Guys Think Of Rosy
5 years, 12 months ago - Rohit Assi
Hi Shooters!
My name is Rohit, early this year I produced a short film called 'Rosy'. 'Rosy' is a short film about a young womans troubled life and how she uses dance to escape her problems. Its a very metaphorical and poetic piece. It was shot on the RED camera around Derby and Leicester. 'Rosy' has been submitted into various film festivals around the U.K and across the world.
Please check it out and let me know what you think. Please don't hesitate to tell me on what I could have done better, I'm always on board for advice and criticism :)

Lovely work. Strongest when most abstract. Her movement is compelling and well photographed, especially in the framing of her and the world around her.
I thought her vocal delivery was unexpected, at first the flatness really caught me off guard and was compelling but across the whole piece I found I stopped listening. This might also be because I'm not sure the v/o is always in sympathy with the image. For instance at 43' that delicious edit to the odd framed doorway is very powerful but I long for the v/o to be either before or after the cut rather than carrying over it.
I also felt the more a traditional drama element intrudes the more it muddies the water. Her v/o seems to be talking very much about an internal struggle she is having, a coming to terms with herself. Her dance also feels like a very personal story. As the film progresses though it seems more like her problem is her abusive partner. I often struggled to feel the cause and effect between him and her. No disrespect to the actor at all, but I think you could remove him from this film altogether and have a shorter more tightly focused piece that really felt like a journey into her soul.
But again, where it works it works very well indeed. It's nice to see a film that allows dance to carry narrative. Good luck with it.

Hi Ben
Thank you so much for your in-depth analytical criticism it is very much appreciated! I have shown your review to the rest of the crew and they too appreciate it. Above all else as upcoming filmmakers what we appreciate most is the time you took out of your day to appreciate the film itself. The way you balanced the negative with the positive was eye opening. I will make sure to take your criticism on-board and what we need to focus on for the next time.
Thank You so much.
Rohit
