What Does A Sound Recordist Do?

10 years, 4 months ago - Rich Jarman

Hi,

I signed up here as a composer looking for a project but I'm very interested in film in general.

In other work I do I've worked in recording studios and live venues as a sound engineer and have done lots of work in radio. I've interviewed politicians, rock stars and household names and recorded "on location" all for national radio and I've produced podcasts that have been number one on the iTunes chart.

I'm really proud of this but I'm not just saying it for fun, I'm trying to express that I feel I've got a really good understanding of how to get good sound to tape in a variety of situations and with varying degrees of pressure (I.E. often when there's only one chance).

Anyway, I'm always interested in new things and have thought about offering to get involved on some of the projects I see here looking for crew as it seems lots of people are looking for sound recordists here and I thought I'd ask here to see if people could give some insights and suggest if I'm being hopelessly naive to think I might have transferable skills.

What do you think, Shooting People?

It's hell. Picture this: I'm a singer/songwriter/producer/composer or however you call that, and I gave up on sound in film, at least for now. It seems the harder I try recording the best possible sound, the worse it gets. Our latest short uses only sound recorded by the mics that are embedded in the cameras, and some of my music.

I had no experience in sound and learnt on the job, starting in March last year. It seems to me that you are more than qualified but you will need to learn film set procedures and etiquette. Most ads ask for someone with their own kit. Message me if you want to know more

PS: I thought sound would be my forte, too before starting out with film.
