It sounds like senior management worked quite naively, not understanding their costs fully or defining their contracts clearly enough. Watching that film, when the client wanted to change things, they just changed them and did the extra work free.
Instead of it being scoped as fresh requirements with an additional cost, they gave the client a fixed-price all-you-can-eat CGI buffet. This is why some software companies live and others die - you can't base your business on fixed income with unlimited variable costs. Sure, the client won't be happy and in some cases will go to the next guy - so let that guy go bankrupt instead, they'll come back to you next time if you're still trading and he's broke. You can even buy his company assets cheap and hire his people for pennies.
