Festivals are commercial entities, they make money from your submissions, so you're right to be choosy.

By FAR the best things you can do are to pick your genre closely (drama in a horror festi is useless), and as local as possible.

Local makes a big difference - the other way festivals make money is by attendance. It's hard to sell tickets to a shorts programme, but if you can schedule multiple local shorts, then all their cast, crew and parents will buy tickets.

Hi Makon, on the recourses page you'll find a list of UK festivals, and BAFTA & Oscar qualifying festivals https://shootingpeople.org/resources/

As Paddy said, it's always good to do your research to make sure that the festival screens the type of film you have made. There are also lots of festivals that focus on a particular genre. Filmfreeway is a great place to search through festivals and read reviews by filmmakers. Best of luck, Molly
