INDEXWhat is my Role in the new production idea?
3 years, 8 months ago - Oscar Heron
Can someone please help me with this conundrum?
A friend who has written a script and a co-creator of the pilot idea have brought me in to help get the script made into a drama series. I am an actor and have been entering the script comps and contacting broadcasters for advice on how to progress into Development. Im not raising money or funds so Im not a Producer, but I feel I am doing a lot of work. I have organised script readings and asked some actor friends to take part. I have also been collating legal documents and learning more about the production side of the industry eg; joining Shooting People :)
So am I a creative producer / showrunner or something else? I dont know how to approach others trying to sell this script idea which i really believe in.
Thank you.

Right now, just call yourself the Producer.
If you ever get to the stage where credits need to be written, you can fine tune the title then. But right now, you are doing thr work of getting the project to the level where someone has to start asking for money, and I'd lay good money that soon there will be the "well, you've been running the show so far, so, you ask" conversation.

Hey Oscar,
My best guess is you are an actor who has been asked to do something which is not in your skill set - that is unless you are an in demand A listed actor whose name opens doors into the industry as people listen to you and expect you to play a prominent part of it? As a rule, when pitching a new project the only thing that is needed is a pilot script, logline, character breakdown and synopsis for you/them to go about your work. Until its green lit, most writers do not write the other episodes until they know those with money believe in it to the point of backing it which may mean believing in it to the point where it is so exceptional that coproduction deals will be done with other companies to make it happen - the other way to finance it is as a web series or winning the euro millions. Now, if you have lots of great contacts who owe you huge favours, well then...

Hey Oscar, I've been in this situation myself -- once you're defined in a certain role, people like to pigeonhole you in that role for the forseeable! I agree with Marlom in that you are the producer; however, I would specify your role as "creative producer" as I've worked on a lot of projects in the latter position and had limited influence on funding, budgeting, etc but maintained my producing role. I also think it's a conversation you need to have with your friends as early as possible: you need to ensure that your role is specified and agreed, preferably through e-mail/in writing.

+1 for "Producer", then depending on who else gets involved you can agree any title changes thereafter :)

Hi Oscar - didn't realise this was still on-going. Okay, this is my experience. In 2019 I put on two stage plays and made a short film which will hopefully one day be part of a larger IMDb feature (covid permitting). I consider myself a creative but if I had to land on one definition, I would say I am a writer as that is what I do with the majority of my time, However, to gets the productions made and out there, I put on a producer hat to ensure the show would happen. Did I mention I was the writer when/if asked? Sure and do you know, if I was filthy rich I would have paid someone to do it but that is not the way for those on a limited budget and narrow profit margins. Since then, I have been an exec producer on a friends project.
In regard to how you should present yourself, it seems you're an actor who is being asked to set aside acting and do whatever is necessary to get the show on the road. If that's not for you then you need to tell your friends and step aside so they can ask someone else.
