What is the best video camcorder under £500 (if it exists!) for home based video production?

5 years, 2 months ago - Remi Aiyela

I have a home-based TV studio for a YouTube channel, mostly speaking to camera. I have a NikonD5600 but it's rubbish for video, as I discovered after spending £400! Any suggestions, please? Or else, where can I get a used one? Thanks.

I have a Canon XF100 - I bought few years ago and I used it only few times. I'm happy to sell it.

2 angles here. Firstly, if mainly speaking to camera, your emphasis should really be on sound rather than vision. Good quality XLR mics installed as close as possible to the speaker. An xlr audio module linked to the camera. Secondly, the camera itself doesn't need to be terribly expensive or hi-tech. If youtube is the main target, ie purely web-based, and hence viewed on VGA, then, shock, horror, you really don't want res higher than 720i. Anything more just slows down the uploading and processing at the other end.

If it's purely for vlogging you might find your phone or a decent webcam from Logitech is good enough. With good lighting even webcams can look okay. Use a separate USB microphone, such as a Blue Yeti. If you've got an iPhone there's an app that turns it into a USB camera for use with OBS Studio.
