What should be in a first showreel for someone transferring from another industry?

10 years, 4 months ago - Nicola Gaughan

I'm an experienced freelance designer and photographer and have developed an interest in film and film making over the last couple of years, gaining experience on several shorts as a production assistant/runner/stills photographer. I've recently completed the Film Foundation Fortnight at London Film Academy with the aim of gaining employment in the industry. I've written a 90 minute screenplay and also a short film which I'm currently producing and editing.
Several jobs I want to apply for ask for a show reel. I'm wondering what sort of material I should put in a first showreel, given that I can't use the 1 minute film I created at LFA as they want to put it into a festival and that the short I'm currently working on isn't finished yet.
Any advice/suggestions gratefully received.

You should still be able to excerpt it?? I would, anyway :-)

Why can't you use extracts of your LFA short? Seems a strange constraint. If you've no other work, though, you've no showreel, really!

The reason I can't use the LFA film is that they want to put it into festivals & some festivals ask that the film not have been seen anywhere else before.
