INDEXWhich is the best social media platform for filmmakers in 2023?
2 years, 2 months ago - Shona Charlton
I’m planning to cut down the time I spend posting or engaging on social media by maintaining active accounts on only two platforms.
Lately I’ve found the Meta offerings (FB and IG) less than useful and rife with spam, bots and spambots lol. Aside from the ethical concerns over data. The algorithm is very broken and you get either nothing in return for time spent, or the wrong kind of engagement. I’m not
planning to earn a degree in social media just to get it to work as it was meant to.
If you had to pick just two social networks, which ones are better R.O.I (with investment being time) in your experience?
1. Instagram
2. TikTok
3. YouTube
4. Facebook
5. LinkedIn
6. Pinterest
7. Twitter
thanks

I'm so glad that you've asked this question because I feel the same way... except that I'm currently finding Instagram the best. However, I'm always being told that 'everything' in the film industry happens on Twitter but I always find it very disappointing. And what about LinkedIn? Is anyone using that? Any experiences and insight would be gratefully received.
Thanks Shona x

It's an interesting subject, even though I don't find social media all that interesting. I'm not very good at having to continuously post, I find that a chore, even setting time out to schedule posts...
I mainly use Facebook as that is where I've had success. I mainly focus on targeted FB groups and that is where I've been able to generate sales of my films.
I have an FB group and page, my group has over 1k in it but my posts get throttled to a handful unless of course you pay.
I sometimes (very rarely) use Instagram but I find it frustrating that you can't include clickable links in your posts, directing folks to where you want them to hopefully buy my latest film.
I know you get one link in your bio but I have several places I want to direct folks to. This is where I find FB better for me.
It's been suggested to me to start using Twitter again and I've updated my account due to leaving it inactive for many years. But they say to get any traction you should post 3 times a day... and like I said above, I'm not very good at having to continually post! :-)
I use YouTube holding monthly Live-Streams screening movies, but I'm not sure if that has helped generate many sales exactly, but it gives me a presence.
I think, like you say, picking two you are good at, or best at, and just focus on those is a lot better than being on all of them, being spread too thin where it's possibly a waste of time.
I also think that - to get what you want out of social media you have to pay-to-play, I don't know if growing organically works anymore, unless you're willing to spend a ton of time building it... only for the platforms to move the goal posts at any time.
