This is a lightly edited transcript of a conversation with an Academy member, such as:
"Jake Gyllenhaal [not getting nominated]? Come on. Why not talk about another black actor who was worthy of a nomination?"
LOL.

Particularly enlightening was the 'Shorts? Meh!' - it sums up the overwhelming indifference in the industry to short form films when the judges don't even bother to watch them, even after they've been pre-screened and Oscar nominated!

Observe! Award Ceremonies of all kinds are voted by humans, with human motivations, and humans have all kinds of complex social motivations. BAFTAs and general elections are no better.
We are in film, an industry all about understanding complex motivations - whether on screen (eg A Most Wanted Man) or just getting punters to part with a tenner to see your work on the big screen. Hopefully a couple of Shooters will appreciate how complex and often arbitrary decisions people will make, and not be too gutted that for the umpteenth year running, we missed out on the little statues!
