I'm a professional DoP, camera operator and self-shooting director, with 20 years experience in the camera department. Alongside my shooting work I offer bespoke camera and lighting tuition.

This training is probably of most benefit for those wanting to improve their shooting skills for TV and documentary (such as APs, researchers, self-shooters), and those wanting to get to grip with new cameras, improve their interview lighting skills and learn to shoot sequences for TV, corporates and branded content.

I've taught APs and researchers how to shoot for primetime programmes Escape to the Country and Grand Designs. I've led filmmaking workshops with young people for the BBC and National Youth Film Academy, and In 2010 I spent a month teaching filmmaking in Kabul, Afghanistan. I've even taught DSLR basics to Shooting People staff!

Generally, teaching happens either using your own equipment, or equipment you have access to via a production company. Alternatively, we can rent in if it's a very specific camera you need training up on.

I'm experienced with all cameras across the board, but have an especially strong grip on the more recent Sony's - so the FX3 FX6 and FX9 - as these are the principal cameras currently used in broadcast TV and documentary.

If you're wanting to get to grips with your camera, learn how to light for interviews, or want some hands-on experience with equipment you're going to be shooting with in the near future, I can design a short course to help you get your head round things.

I make it a priority to demystify the technical side of cameras and create shooting habits that make your life easier. In that way, the decisions you have to make on the day you shoot are more focussed on storytelling than colour balance.

If you'd like to discuss possibilities - on cameras large or small - just drop me a line. I am based in Manchester but often work in London. Training would take place at your home, production company or other suitable location you have access to.

Shooters price: £300 + vat / day. Negotiable based on personal circumstances and availability. Feel free to reach out whatever your circumstances.
