Thus

From Joseph Steele

About the film:

"I am a protester and this is my protest"

The psychotic Zed rides her deluded mind into oblivion, taking the local farmer and vicar with her.

Director's statement:
I started writing Thus in 2011 as a full length feature. After shooting a 3 minute pilot film for £1,000 in January 2013 I realised I could only realistically afford to make a 10 minute short film and I didn’t want to wait around for funding. I stripped down the script to my main theme; a psychotic woman raging against God and humanity. I wanted a film that didn’t spell everything out for the viewer and I cut a lot of elaborate dialogue and extra characters from the script in favour of strong visuals and a more suggested narrative.

My overriding ambition for this film was to create an unusual, memorable film with production values that eclipsed all of my work before it.

The film is filled with symbolism; The title ‘Thus’ is a reference to Nietzsche’s ‘Thus Spoke Zarathustra’ in which a hermetic figure comes down from the mountains to extol truths to the ordinary people in the valley with varying success. Zed is in a personal battle with herself and with existence, and 'Thus' is really an expression of that battle. I feel it can be taken literally or symbolically.
