My Brother Is A Mermaid

From Alfie Dale

About the film:

Synopsis: My Brother is a Mermaid is a 20 minute social-realist fairytale, about the unconditional love and admiration of a younger brother for their transgender sibling. The film is set in a run down coastal town in Cornwall, where 7 year old Kuda spends all his time exploring magical beaches and pestering his teenage brother, Kai, to teach him to surf. Kuda knows intuitively that there is something different about Kai, but he doesn't know what. After Kuda witnesses a brutal incident of abuse against Kai, he starts looking for clues and imagining possibilities. The obvious answer for Kuda; Kai must be a mermaid. Through the imaginative eyes of 7 year old Kuda, the film follows the story of a transgender teenager's battle with her family, community and herself, and ultimatley looks at how a child's innocence and unconditional love can be a powerful and disruptive force for good.

This is a really collaborative project. We are looking for people to work closely with to develop a strong vision that delicately marries vivid imagination with grit and emotional realism. References we are particularly keen on are 'Beasts of the Southern Wild', 'The Florida Project' and 'Moonlight'.

Thus far we have assembled a superbly talented group of individuals, with a shared passion for the project. If you want to find out more, please visit - www.mermaidshortfilm.com for more info about the film. If you wish to join our team, please get in touch.

Thanks so much,
