The World is Sinuous

From John Wise

About the film:

Breath... The World is Sinuous a film by Ali Beletic, NYC 3/2006. Non-narrative. Screened April 11, 2007 at the 23 Windows Film & Art Screening in Brooklyn.
The sound for this film is the result of a very close collaboration between the sound designer and the filmmaker. Director Ali Beletic had a very clear concept of the function sound that should play in the development of the naturalism inherent in her approach to the film. There was minimal electronic processing and no sound synthesis used. The sound score uses a combination of originally recorded and stock sounds. All the sounds were acoustic in nature. Compositionally the approach for the sound score drew on the tradition of Musique Concrete. Attention was paid to the use of blocks, strands and beds of sound to create a music-like structure that both defines and ties together the three parts of the film: The inhale, the interior, the exhale. The sound score also includes musical excerpts from an original music composition by sound designer John Wise. The composition “Four sustaining” was performed and recorded in recital at Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 1978. The piece uses aleatoric compositional methods.
