Quiet Scream

From Lee Daniel

About the film:

I am the writer and director of Quiet Scream: my first microfilm. It explores what it is like to experience a psychotic episode. This is an area of mental illness that intrigues me as my brother has been a sufferer of schizophrenia for 10 years and in that time I have met with stigma and a poor understanding of the condition. And so not only does the patient suffer in silence but so does the family. Many prevailing misconceptions about this disease exist, and the public generally fears the symptoms. However, what is lesser known, is that sufferers often take their own lives as they struggle to manage the conditions. I had a small amount of time to try to get the viewer to connect with the nightmarish world that the main character; John, inhabits. I would in the future like to explore this subject further and make a long short which elaborates on these themes.

Hi Lee Just wanted to pass on my best wishes having just watched Quiet Scream. Very powerful indeed. I believe that to tell these stories, to irradiate stigmas and labels is a very valuable thing to do. Being mentally unwell and suffering is dark and frightening but portrayed sensitively and true, I feel only succeeds to highlight the resilience and strength of a human being. The fact that John slipped a message under the door was admirable, courageous even. I'm currently developing a short animated documentary about hoarding. Based on my own experience of my father in-laws excessive hoarding. His name was John too, a common name which in itself is a metaphor for how common debilitating mental heath conditions are. Hope you're having a great week. Susie

Wow, Lee that's so powerful. So well put together, and you managed to get so much over in a short time, I love the way its shot and edited. I have a friend who has suffered, and I'm going to call him now to check on him. So you influenced me. Darren
