A couple of our recent 48hr films

1 year, 8 months ago - Ed Willey

Over the past few months we’ve made not one, but TWO short film in less than 48 hours.

I love doing these competitions cos it can really force you out of your comfort zone and there’s no time to overthink or second guess yourself!

If you’re not familiar with the 48hr format, you get given two random genres, a character, prop and line of dialogue on the Fri evening. Then you write, shoot, edit and hand in a finished film by 7:30pm Sun!

(my original post got cut off when I submitted it and there's no edit button(?) so here's the rest of my post... :/)

Back in Sep we entered the London 48hr competition and ended up getting 2nd place, and also won for editing, with our spy/thriller ‘Beneath the Dirt’ - https://youtu.be/-SbqlKdScrY

Then, as we placed top 3, we were invited to compete against all top 3 teams from around the world in the 48’s Yes We Cannes global competition, where the top 8 films will screen at Cannes next year.

We shot our art heist entry for this on a VERY cold first weekend of Dec and are now allowed to share it publicly whilst judging of the 103 submitted films continues until mid-Jan!

Fantastic - wishing you every success in Cannes! How did you manage the locations? Did you have access to suitable places or did you find them? Do you have a BTS footage?

I just realised the second film link was also cut off :( (what's with the character limit restrictions on these posts?!?)

‘A Piece of Work’ - https://youtu.be/w8Xn1QGH8a4

The location for both films is a converted pub where someone who works for my partner lives! I find locations one of the hardest things for these comps as you have no idea what kind of film you'll be making so need something suitably versatile.

No footage, but we had a stills photographer for the shoot linked above, pics here; https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/k7edpu3sup1b0cqesd88w/h?rlkey=vx7uret9t7qbzu8ekp3nvfp3h&dl=0

That is fantastic, Ed. Loved 'A Piece of Work' - so original and well shot and acted. The location worked so well, too.

As a quick update to this... out of the 104 films that entered, we've now been selected as a Top 15 film to screen at Filmapalooza in Lisbon in March!! :D

We also got nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category and Best Cinematography which is a massive boost for the team that worked so hard on the film!!

Thanks for all the support!

Impressive production values in both films, Ed!

As a lover of gritty crime TV, there were parts of Beneath The Dirt that really spoke to me — especially the outside shots from 5:40 mins.

Congratulations to all involved!

Hi Ed, really compelling work. I am a composer based in London and have a lot of material that is available to license for free for this kind of work. This way I can build my portfolio and add value to films that are produced in a rush. Please check out my work and keep me in mind for any future projects.

Hi Ed.
That's fantastic and no small feat in such limited time. Sorry, I'm only just reading yours (and other posts) now as I missed out on a number of SP bulletins when getting a few projects of my own finished. All the best moving forwards, Bob
