INDEXA self distribution Success Story

A post here on SP about the inability of getting a drama into distribution got me thinking about self-distribution, and I ran across this great article on crowd sourcing and four walling a doc on fire fighters. And it's in profit.
"We understand why filmmakers shy away from theatrical, and why distributors are avoiding it like the plague: Most films probably don’t have a strong sense of audience, or a clear-cut way to reach it without a large advertising budget."

I wish they discussed numbers in more detail. What does being "in profit" mean exactly? Everyone is so tight lipped about the income their films are generating that it can send misleading messages. I do think that self distribution makes much more sense for indie filmmakers. I know far too many people who are routinely getting screwed by their distro and haven't seen a penny from their efforts despite relatively strong overseas interest.

I couldn't agree more, Kays. The only way to make a profit from a distributor on a first film is to sell it to them outright.
