INDEXActors\Actresses to write for
11 years, 1 month ago - Roger Francis Cook
I am a Writer\Director looking to shoot a couple of shorts over the summer period. My approach for these project is to write parts for specific actors and create a collaborattive script.
If you are an actor\actress of any age or nationality and there is a character type you have been yearning to play but have never had the chance, or there is something missing from your showreel that you need, I am looking to work with you.
Please send to me examples of your work, headshot etc and what type of part you want to play via Shooting People and we can carry on from their.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Rodger,
I only recently graduated drama school so i currently have a lack of any footage to create a showreel. I have done a few shorts but have been unable to get hold of this footage too so i am looking to get anything really.
Casting wise i would like to play a young and naive romantic lead. Perhaps something regal. I do also love playing wacky comic characters. I love the characters from Julie Walters and Victoria Wood's sketches. This sort of thing but maybe toned down a bit. I would also like to do some presenting.

I'm interested in a collaboration Roger I am going to send you a PM and lets see if we can come up with something I like character parts and I want to try and mix a couple of different time periods within the same project with a blurred line between the two, reality/fantasy or fact/fiction regards Peter

Love to talk further Roger. What a brilliant idea. I'll send you a message with my CV and experience.
Dan and Allan, loving the banter (and serious side of the healthy debate). It's one go the reasons I love SP.

Thanks, Angela. I think I'm the official SP curmudgeon. I've been around the industry much too long and seen too many things to not have strong (usually negative) opinions! But every once in a blue moon, people like Rodger renew my faith in the filmmaking youth of the world. I REALLY want to see where his project leads.

Hi Roger, thanks for your post. I'd be interested in getting involved in a simple shoot which could show off some emotional rawness for me - I'd like to get very fierce and teary, as my showreel is missing this. Perhaps some kind of confrontation with a boyfriend or what not. I would be interested to hear if this is a scenario you'd like to shoot! I'm currently training at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, and am back for summer from the beginning of July until the end of September. I have been acting for several years prior to going to drama school, and I want a spanking new showreel for when I graduate next year. My links are below. Look forward to hearing from you!

Hi Roger, I echo what Julie has written - in spite of being a mature 'returning' actress, I'm not really a typical granny ;-) I'd love some comedy for my show-reel :-)

Hi Roger,
Something I feel strongly about is the fact that women in their late fifties/early 60s are generally consigned to 'granny' roles when we're out-and-about in the world as much as anyone else - working, forging new relationships, having sex, having adventures, contributing to society etc. I've been lucky to have recently played a couple of great roles in short films ('Rosemary Jane' and 'Pearl') but these are few and far between. Some great writing for interesting women in this age-group would be great.

Hi Roger, how refreshing for someone to ask me who I want to play! My stereotype is British Asian mum/doctor/wife/business pro...etc,but what I can do well is grit! I am great at emotional stuff & have some combat experience (martial arts). I would love this more streetwise & interesting side on my showreel. I am also setting up some short film collaborations so maybe there are a few avenues to discover in working together. my Spotlight number is 4411-3427-3107.

Hi Roger,
It's great to see this post. I am currently compiling my showreel but am heavy on series, slow-moving material and need to shoot some lighter, casual stuff, maybe some comedy.
I also wouldn't mind having some footage in a different accent - my father is Egyptian so I have slightly foreign looks and am often thought of as being Eastern European, so a Polish character would be useful for me.
I trained at LAMDA and graduated in 2011. Here is my Spotlight page: www.spotlight.com/4217-7862-7496
Do you have an e-mail I can send the edited material I have so far?
Looking forward to hearing from you.

The fake trailer is from a sketch show that's been going for about 30 years now, so network advertising dollars paid for it (is that what you were asking about?).
I always enjoyed "A bit of Fry and Laurie" when they held a mirror up to America.
I often get taken to task for steering these threads in a different direction, so I'll leave it at that. Glad you enjoyed it!

HA! Yes, I suppose there are a lot of "tossers" here, Mac! But having been around quite awhile, the actors I tend to know and work with are working professionals. We have two types of Tossers here: the professional acting school attendee and the "I just want to be famous" type. But I don't consider them true actors. Acting is a bit like playing the drums: anyone can pound on the things, but it take true dedication and skill to pull emotion out of them.
I like your comment about not using natural traits. Interesting. I've not come across that in my world. Perhaps when I encourage a natural trait I've observed, the actor doesn't know that about themselves, which is a sort of fascinating thing to think about.
For the British cliche, there is nothing better than this fake trailer from Saturday Night Live:

Watch it. You won't be sorry.
As always, thanks for the insightful comments, Allan!

I'm a bit of a romantic here! My dream is to play Elizabeth Bennett in Pride & Prejudice, but as I'm French it might probably never happen. I admire her strength of character, how she stands for what she believes in no matter what and does not give in to the rules, she follows her own rules. So if you want to imagine a woman with those characteristics, let me know, I'm in.
Warm regards,

Whilst agreeing Dan that most actors have 'natural personality traits' you don't need to get them off actors exclusively. In fact given the artificial and more-than-a-little anxious world of theatre/cinema, you're more likely to get 'unrealistic' behaviour from actors (paradoxically?). I don't know what it's like your side of the pond Dan but over here (and speaking as an actor who writes a bit) there are some spectacular tossers in our biz. Some would say I'm one. As a writer I've continually got one ear open for the odd snatched phrase that you know is 'authentic'. How many expressions do you hear in cinema -probably less so now than yesteryear - that were invented in the studio and you never hear used outside the cinema? (I'm trying to think of one - maybe you can)
And Roger, while I'm here, as an actor (not in the first flush - you seem to have attracted a surfeit of them, both genders) the sort of part I've been cast in most often is the sort of person I don't really like in real life (although I've known a few) and that's a cockney yob/gangster. For me these parts are falling-of-a-log time. But whatever, your idea sounds intriguing and if you've got the time/inclination you might like to check out my showreel - Mac McKenna showreel 2013.

I'd just like to say, Good On You Roger. So often actors get a bad rap, and they are the most dedicated and creative people. I love the lot of them.
If I might make a suggestion: hang out with all of them. Get to know them outside of the project. You'd be surprised at what natural personality traits you can include in your writing and development of character.
