INDEXAdvice please on best software to convert mxf files to format compatible for editing on FCP 7 - thanks!

Hi,
Looking for help and paid help if anyone is local to me (OX39 4PU). I'm a self shooter learning on the job with a CanonXF 305 shooting on Compact Flash. My stumbling block is always a good process in getting footage into my FCP 7 to then edit. Unfortunately it's the 'techy' stuff that beats me, but I really need to improve this area!!
So any advice firstly on software to convert files, but any pointers to someone who might be willing to teach me some stuff on ingesting and editing and doesn't mind someone asking lots of questions...would love to hear from you as well!! As I said happy to pay for that!

You're in Oxfordshire, try OFVM, now trading as http://www.filmoxford.org. As for the transcode likely you'll find Sorenson Squeeze will do what you're after, although you may need to pay a little more for a direct to ProRes422 codec if that's what you want. It ALL depends on the quality you need, transcoding is always a slow job, so it might be better to see if there's a better overall workflow for you - for instance instead of using FCP use Avid and edit the MXF files natively?

Apologies for the delay, but many thanks for your answers. Discovered I hadn't got the Canon XF Utility plugin, which sorted it. However, suggestions on other NLE software useful as I've avoided upgrading to Mavericks for fear of losing functions in FCP7. Trying to decide now, what's best to use in the future. Thank you again for your time. H

You can import Canon XF 305 footage directly into FCP7 without having to unwrap the MXF files first. You need to to download and install the free Canon XF Utility available here;
http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0040354.asp
You can then use the Log & Transfer importing option to browse & ingest your footage.
Best of luck :-)

p.s. it's really quick with final cut; you don't need to change your editing programme. It will convert MXF to ProRes very very quickly without any hitches once you update the plug in for FCP.

You don't need to purchase any software & the disk that came with your camera should have the software on for FCP that enables you to log and transfer. At any of the ProRes settings, although I would recommend standard prores. I have an XF100 and it's really quick and easy & doesn't need any external software at all. The only thing to bare in mind, is that your footage will grow in size by about 3 times in storage media space i.e. 16gb of MXF will become about 50GB. Also, always edit with the same tileline settings as your final ProRes files. Cheers T

I'm Oxford based, have studios in St. Clements and have three XF305 cameras. Using .mxf converter (not the trial version) will work, but it's a lengthy process. Premiere Pro, however imports .mxf files seamlessly and with no trouble, so switching to Premiere Pro 5 or 6 is by far the easiest and most efficient way.

Toast Titanium will convert MXF. Also PavTube has a convertor for $29. A new product EditReady does MXF very well and fast. There are different favors of MXF so double check that the Canon variety is covered. I believe you can also do log and transfer or it's equivalent for card based media directly from camera to FCP7 using play settings in camera.
