Any filmmakers here in Portugal?

7 years, 2 months ago - Vasco de Sousa

I would put this under "'jobs" and hire an advisor, but then, Portugal is included with Canada, Australia, the Ukraine and Syria and everywhere else under "International." (Not that I don't plan to visit those places eventually, but not just now, and those aren't exactly within commuting distance to Portugal.)

And, well, it's not just about finding people right now.

I wonder, if you're in Portugal, and I move there, how easy is it to make films without speaking good Portuguese? (I know "Bom dia" and how to ask simple questions, but my relatives joke that I'm speaking Welsh, or something else, when I attempt anything complex.)

What about living expenses? How much should one budget if you are struggling to learn the language, before landing a job (with a moderately large family)? If you don't have money, is it possible to find temp work quickly while there?

If someone comes in, without good Portuguese, but has some Portuguese ancestry and is willing to go along with the culture, are they treated like a foreigner? Or, can you eventually re-assimilate? How easy is it to blend in? To be considered a local? (And, if someone who doesn't have a Portuguese name comes along, how does that affect things?)

Also, are the filmmakers in Portugal obsessed with horror and pretentious art films? Or, are there still fans of Charlie Chaplin moving cameras?

If you know the answer to even one of those questions, I'd appreciate it.

Obrigado,
Vasco
