Any London meetings of science documentary film-makers?

8 years, 11 months ago - Olga Yakimenko

Hello all,

I'm a Londoner trying to get into the field of science documentaries, and I'd love to meet and chat to like-minded people. I want to share concepts, look for collaborators, find out about new and exciting works, and maybe lend a hand here and there when I can. I also love vintage/modern avant-garde documentaries, and feel like there's a lot I'm missing out on!

Where are you wonderful people, and whom do I bribe to join you?

hi there, I make documentaries about science, amongst other things, and have just moved to London. So I'd totally be keen to meet up as well. If there's not a group already, let's make one happen.

Hi,

This might be a bit specific (science focus documentary groups, I mean.)

A general doc group, where you could discuss science based docs, might be better?

Something like DocHeads (http://docheads.org) or Frontline Club (http://www.frontlineclub.com) maybe.

Olga, and everyone, it so happens I'm looking to get a documentary made about mostly physics. There are a number of scientific concepts to be covered. Hardcore. I'm not in London, so maybe we all can meet via skype or something?

I would highly recommend going to the Wildscreen Film Festival in Bristol coming up in October 2016 (next month!) It is held in the UK every other year only. It attracts the finest natural history filmmakers from all over the world. In addition, the commissioners are also there from the US (Discovery, National Geographic) and the UK (BBC) and elsewhere, and there are many wonderful workshops and parties.

My company Guvnor Media is in the process of pitching a TV show which is matching science based projects with investors. We've had real success with this type of mini documentary before with Brunel.

Our studio is in Birmingham but I'm up and down to London regularly, perhaps as Tyler said, we should make it happen.

Hi there, as Janelle mentioned, Wildscreen is full of great filmmakers, but it is unfortunately even more expensive than Sheffield DocFest. Still, I'll be going for a couple of days.

I asked Tristan at DocHeads and he couldn't think of a science documentary meet up, so I'm going to start one. I'll keep you guys in the loop and let you know where, but it will be towards the end of the month.

Hello all,

Apologies for the stupid late reply - glad there is so much interest! Wildscreen does seem terrific, but definitely out of my price range for the moment.

Tyler - please keep us posted! It would be terrific to get the word out and make it a regular thing. I'm keen to meet in any capacity, formal or otherwise, and would be delighted to chat and get to know people. I'm also a little shy, so starting small could be good.

If anyone is around to have words over some tea or coffee next Friday (23rd), would love to either talk concepts or just meet others with similar interests, because many of my film acquaintances get a bit bored when I gush about microscopy or time lapses.

Hi, I was glad to read about this. I would be glad to join for a tea on 23rd because I write alone most of the time in a room and I would be grateful to meet and speak with actual people... I haven't done documentaries yet but I am a filmmaker. Can I go please? ;)

Hi Zsani,

Terrific! I just got back from being abroad so pardon the silence (seriously Tyler, I hope you make this happen because I'm terrible at organizing). Would you and all those interested like to join me at the London Grind cafe (2 London Bridge) tomorrow at 6:30? I'll stick around there until about 8 or so. Longer next time, but figured this is better than nothing!

Still stuck at work for about another hour. I did a terrible job of putting this together and suspect the results will be suitably lonely, so unless someone pipes in in the next hour, I might go home. Oh God, I am TERRIBLE.

Did you guys ever manage to Meetup?

I am in pre-production of a documentary about some of the most innovative medical research in history.

I have access and would be happy to discuss your projects and mine.

Meeting like minded people is always a joy.

Thomas
