INDEXAnyone able to lend/rent me some 35mm film winders?
12 years ago - SP User
Hi - I have some 16mm and 35mm film material to look through, and I need a set of film winders and a split 35mm reel (and a 16mm split reel too) for a few days to wind through and examine it all.
Does anyone have a set that they could lend me or rent me for a nominal fee? I'd need them for 2-3 days.
The kind I'm looking for would clamp to a table. And ideally they'd be ones with a 16mm adapter, but the 35mm is the hard part. I need a split reel because what I have is raw camera negative on cores. I'd also need a take-up reel. I might have to use two different sizes for the two different gauges of film.
Seems like all this old equipment has either been sold off for scrap or thrown out -- I'm finding it impossible to find.
The kind of thing I'm looking for is this: http://www.philiprigby.co.uk/pages/browsecat-sdes.php?detail=Manual+Rewinders
Cheeky request, I know, but I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me out or point me in the right direction.
I'm in North London, but could pick up and drop them back of course.
Thanks in advance,
Oliver.

To add to Paddy's suggestion-- There MUST be a negative cutter in London. They'd have all that stuff. Here in L.A. I've found negative cutters to be very helpful people. You might also try studios. I'd be shocked if Pinewood didn't have all that you need stuffed into some back room. How about film schools? Many still teach classes in the old ways (at least over here). And finally, post rental houses. Find one that's been around awhile. They still have all that stuff, again, here in L.A. You could rent a bench and a set of rewinds here for next to nothing for 3 days. (We call them "rewinds" over here).
I've never seen rewinds that clamp to a table, but I suppose they exist. It would be better to have a proper bench with rewinds bolted to it (along with a light box!!!!). I'm not sure what you mean by "16mm adapter." Winders are winders. It doesn't matter whether it's 16 or 35. Your split reels will be either 16 or 35. There is no adapter for that. It would also be useful to have a couple of rewind clamps. They make sure that the reel on the rewind doesn't start sliding down the rod.

I've no idea if it's even getting you close to what you want altogether, but most cinemas have things that look somewhat similar covered in junk in their projection rooms now 95%+ digital... However there is still the of film that needs making up, breaking down, etc. In many you could probably use it in situ for the price of a bacon sandwich! Any help?
