Anyone know where I can hire a pirate ship and an eastern looking palace interior?

5 years, 8 months ago - Jane Sanger

For my next short film/promo/teaser/pilot I need to locate a pirate ship on the water that can be used for filming. I know about the Matthew at Bristol, any others?

Also does anyone know of an eastern(N African to be precise) muslim, very opulent interior in London or home counties I could hire and mock up as a palace?

Thanks,
Jane

Leighton House is Islamic inspired. Available for private rent, including for film shoots. Probs cost a bomb, though, but if you only need a small area of it, maybe you could do a deal. See it here: https://tinyurl.com/t5lgnpv

On the plus side, it already looks like a palace, so no dressing required, probably.

You could always ask Livetts on Shad Thames - if anyone has a suitable boat, it's them.

I'd try talking to The Tall Ships Race/Festival organisers. They probably know all the suitable ships, and which are known to be available for filming.

The Royal Navy also has some big sail training vessels for cadet training, so might be worth talking to.

I recall seeing references to at least one British company specialising in classic period vessels for film. The credits that were shown on the old Onedin Line TV series gave names. There are many types of vessels that have been used by pirates between the 16th and 19th centuries. If period authenticity is important getting it right will be a thing. The smoke and mirrors option together with increasingly affordable photo realistic computer generated imagery might be an option. The bigger and older the vessel the more expensive. The Sail Training Association has some relatively new (under 50 years old ) ships including the Sir Winston Churchill and the Sir Malcolm Miller plus some smaller vessels. Down in Brixham Devon there's a turn of the century period Brixham Trawler, a very evocative two masted gaff ketch, with ratlines (rope ladders) that every period pirate vessel must have, that could easily be represented as a smaller, 19th century, 80 foot pirate vessel. It's available for charter with crew by the day.

Speak to these people; they have several vessels of differing types that could meet the brief. I'm sure there's deals to be done that include promoting their business.
