Anyone still got an HDV deck and wants to do a bunch of conversions?

A dear friend of mine has about 20 HDV cassettes (not all will be full) capturing the last reunion of the survivors of a WW2 prisoner ship which sank. Much more to the story than that, lots of smaller stories within it. He wanted to document those memories whilst the last survivors were still alive, back in 2007, and we had a shoot on HMS Belfast. It was covered by some national press.

A Chinese documentary about the event (it happened in their waters) has learnt of the tapes and is interested in the contents. My friend is keen to share the content, and not to ship off his precious tapes, so needs them ingesting and transferring to files at high and low res. There's cases where some stories were shot from 2 angles, only 1 with good audio, so potentially some sync work, but I've suggested he hold off on that front until he knows which clips need sync, and that we should just do a 60s clip as a sample for the documentarian.

Does anyone still have HDV kit and fancy a bit of light work in exchange for real money? AFAIK everything is 1080i shot on Z1 with interviews and B-roll. The story is a fascinating one overall, so there are free "worthy points" for anyone who connects with it. Yes, we can go to a post house for this, but I wanted to offer it up for anyone in the position to do it and needing some simple cash. He's based in Kingston upon Thames and commutes daily into Victoria so London is ideal, but certainly not a requirement.

If it interests anyone, let me know this week or so. It's not a rush job, particularly.

That's an interesting project Paddy and indeed similar to two projects of our own. As it happens a great deal of the source material we're working from was also shot on HDV 1080i. Our projects are about WWII stories in the air and at sea.

Digitising up to 20 hours of tape in real time and at 1080 will , in reality, require about a working week dedicated to one suite, so not an insignificant job or cost. We're up to our ears with work at the present but if it's not a rush job I'd love to explore the possibilities with your friend. There might be more angles too.

I've got an HDV camera, was my old workhorse (loved it, great in low light) and now sits all forlorn. If all they want is the data captured to files I can probably do that over some evenings. But not willing to mess around with syncing etc. That's a problem I shall leave to the editor :-) Would need to check all kit still works first.
